At the end of last year a consultation titled ‘Reforming the Employment Tribunal System’ was launched. It set out a number of proposals for reforming the tribunal system including digitisation of the claims process.
The government response to the consultation was published on 23 February 2017.
One of the questions posed in the consultation was; ‘Do you agree that with the right system in place the specific needs of users of Employment Tribunals and the Employment Appeal Tribunal can be accommodated in a more digitally based system?’
The government response to that question said that the aim will be to digitise the claims process so users can digitally ‘start a claim, track progress, provide evidence and information, and participate in innovative resolution methods if they can and wish to do so’.
The government response says that it believes this will speed up the time taken for disputes to be resolved.
The government response noted that in some cases this will mean that a physical hearing might not be needed to decide the outcome of the case. The response does however note that automatic determination by technology is not something that is under consideration.
The full consultation and government response can be found online.
