Same-sex marriage. Is this a possible obstacle for Conservatives to form a coalition with the Democratic Unionist Party?

Posted on 14th June, 2017

As we allow the result of the General Election to sink in, the Democratic Unionist Party has declared they will forge a coalition with the Conservatives. However it can be argued that resistance to the introduction of same-sex marriage by the DUP may pose an obstacle to any attempt of this coalition by the Conservatives.

It is clear that both Party’s have very different views in relation to same-sex marriage. Arlene Foster, the DUP leader, said in 2016 that “the party would block same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland for at least another five years.” Northern Ireland is the only remaining part of the UK where same-sex marriage is not legal.

David Cameron in the 2015 election said he “profoundly disagreed” with the DUP’s policy on gay rights and would “never validate” it.
Although same- sex marriage is legal in England this was not legalised without dispute and extreme conflict.
