Employment Law and HR Training 2018

Posted on 18th January, 2018

For many years now the employment team at Jacksons have assisted businesses with their training needs.

With the Christmas season fast becoming a distant memory and terrestrial television taken up with diet and exercise programmes in January an ever pressing issue for employers to consider is the best way to equip their work force with the knowledge to handle employee issues effectively and consistently and in compliance with complex employment legislation and developments in case law.

Stacey West had another busy year in 2017 working with Abdul Shakeel from Drug & Alcohol Testing Services Ltd to provide employment law training on managing substance misuse issues in the workplace to businesses operating in a variety of sectors across the North East, including engineering and manufacturing.

As well as being an experienced training provider Stacey is also a specialist in business immigration law holding a CILEx Level 6 Certificate in Immigration Law and Stacey provides regular free updates to businesses on Brexit, as well as training.

In November Julie Dalzell and Stacey West presented a lunch time session on mental health in the work place at Gloucester House in Stockton and in December the team provided local businesses with a breakfast briefing at the Teesside office on GDPR, employee status, Tribunal fees and the latest Brexit related developments from an immigration perspective.

The team believes that all of these topics will remain key issues for those with people management and/or HR responsibility throughout 2018. Moreover it is expected that with the abolition of Employment Tribunal fees and the continuing focus of the media and scrutiny of the Courts in these and other areas of employment law, individuals will increasingly feel more empowered to challenge employers where they feel their rights are not being recognised.

With this in mind Paul Clark, head of employment and Louise White, company and commercial solicitor, will provide employers with a workshop session on the GDPR at the BIC, Sunderland on 7 February 2018, the aim of this workshop will be to look at all the practical steps businesses can take to ensure compliance with a focus on the more difficult compliance areas such as obtaining consent and prompt notification of data breaches.

On 28 February 2018 the team will present a breakfast seminar at the Teesside office on mental health in the workplace which will be aimed at empowering managers with the knowledge and confidence to identify and address mental health issues in the work place.

From April 2018 to March 2019 the team will run a series of monthly events at both the Teesside and Tyneside offices which will take delegates through the key issues that arise throughout the employment life cycle from recruitment through to the termination of employment. The title of this workshop programme is the Employment life cycle: essential knowhow for businesses and more details will be published shortly. Please continue to watch this space.
