Welcome to my first blog!

This is the first of my blogs as manging partner at Jacksons Law Firm and I hope by writing them I will get chance to give you a flavour of the firm and bring together lots of the amazing things happening here, as well as giving you some insight into the trials and tribulations of managing a law firm.

In my first entry I would like to record how proud I was to be part of a law firm working for charity last week when we held our second Butterwick Bake Off at Hardwick Hall in aid of the Butterwick Hospice. As with the event last year, there was an inter-company baking competition judged at the grand finale by the Women’s Institute (WI) and then by a team of celebrity judges. The ladies of the WI certainly knew what they were doing judging carefully each item. I am glad they were there as we would have had no idea as to where to begin. From our standpoint all the cakes and pies looked amazing and we couldn’t wait to try them. Following on from the calm professionalism of the WI we were then joined by 270 guests for tea and our celebrity judges. Thank you to Eugene McCoy, restauranteur from the Crathorne Arms, Wendy Dean, caterer to the music industry, Patrick Monahan comedian, Chris Tomlinson Olympic athlete and Peter Baron newspaper editor and radio presenter and Paul Frost who compered the event brilliantly for us.

The event looks like it will have raised a magnificent £10,000 for Butterwick Hospice.

In the course of promoting the bake off I am often asked why a law firm decides to run an event like this. There are many reasons beyond the fact that we can raise much needed funds for a great charity but I think the most important is that we as a firm are routed in the community in Teesside – we have been practising here for some 140 years and we need to support that community. The people of Teesside are very lucky to have the Butterwick and it will not survive unless we all support it and provide the funds to employ the wonderful nurses, doctors and carers who look after people at the end of their life and care so sympathetically for their families and friends. Whilst £10,000 feels like a lot of money and whilst at times it was an uphill struggle to raise this it will only cover the costs of the Butterwick for a single day. Fortunately there are lots of other companies with fund raising ideas!
