Are you wishing to change your name? Look no further, this is something that the Family team at Jackson can assist with.
We use something called a Change of Name Deed which is evidence that your name has legally changed. The Deed evidences your old name and explains that you no longer wish to use your old name and that you are now using a new name. You would then be required to sign this Deed in the presence of a witness. The witness would be someone that is over 18 and is independent of you (i.e. not a relative, partner, or an individual you live with) but the witness must know you. After the Deed is signed and witnessed, the Deed has in effect been executed and your old name has been renounced.
You would then be required to show this Deed to Official organizations to prove your name has changed so they can update their records. Official organizations like HMRC, DVLA, and your bank would require a copy of your change of name Deed.
We can also assist with a Change of Name Deed for a child. If the child has attained the age of 16 then the child can change their name without parental consent, using the same method as an adult (as described above). If the child is under 16 then there must be parental consent from each parent with parental responsibility. Both parents must sign the Change of Name Deed. If one parent will not consent to the change of name for their child, then an application must be made to the court.
One question which is often raised is, do I have to change my birth certificate? The simple answer is no. Your birth certificate is a historical record that evidences your birth and does not need to be changed. Instead, you may be required to show your birth certificate and your change of name Deed together. The change of name Deed will override the name on your birth certificate.
